Is Colombia Safe? Firstly it must be remembered that this is a country still involved civil war that has lasted for over 40 years, but despite its reputation for violence and kidnapping in recent years the security situation has been controlled more effectively. The current President Alvaro Uribe, who took office in 2002, has taken a hard line against the guerrillas and paramilitaries and consequently Colombia is now a safer place. South Africa, Venezuela, Jamaica & Brazil have more gun murders than Colombia but that is not portrayed in the media. Kidnappings are lower in Colombia than Haiti and Mexico. With sensible precautions, as with any country, you will have a safe and fantastic trip and you are more likely to be subject to petty theft or street crime than a kidnapping. The principal cities such including Bogotá, Cali and Cartagena are safer for tourists as the guerrillas and paramilitaries operate in rural areas. Kidnappings do not generally occur in cities. The Colombian islands of San Andres & Providencia, located in the Caribbean off the shore of Nicaragua, are also popular and safe. Air travel is recommended rather than overland travel. There is no rail network in Colombia so the overland option is by bus, which are plentiful and cheap. Never travel by bus at night and check with locals that the route is safe. Colombians are as much of a target for kidnappings and violence as foreigners and should be well aware of the danger areas. Of course refer to the Foreign & Commonwealth office information, but don't be put off. I am sure their advice is like a building survey it will never contain good news. www.fco.gov.uk During my first trip to Bogotá I was gripped with fear on the taxi journey from the airport to Zona Rosa, however the reality was that I found that the streets seem much safer than Mexico City and the taxis certainly are safer. Hailing a cab in Mexico City is no no. In Bogotá no problems. In my experience there seems to be less of a threat of street violence than in Mexico DF, where express kidnappings at cash points are commonplace. Don't let the negative publicity spoil a wonderful trip.
